Warning of Driveway Scams
Framingham residents must be vigilant about scams involving driveway paving and sealing contractors. While many companies are reputable, some scammers prey on unsuspecting homeowners, especially senior citizens. Here’s what to watch out for and how to protect yourself.
Common Tactics Used by Scammers:
- Door-to-door offers: Scammers often approach homeowners claiming they have leftover materials from a nearby job, offering a steep discount if you act immediately. You can ask for their city soliciting license number, as they should be registered with the city to solicit.
- Pressure tactics: They’ll urge you to decide immediately, insisting the offer is only available that day or week.
- Cash-only payments: They may ask for cash or checks made out to individuals instead of a business.
- No contract: Scammers often refuse to provide a written agreement or documentation of their work.
- Poor quality or no work: The job is usually substandard and doesn’t follow the city’s standards, or sometimes they don’t do any work at all, leaving you with an even bigger repair bill.
How to Spot a Scam:
- The contractor pressures you to decide on the spot.
- They request full payment upfront or ask you to pay in cash.
- They can’t or won’t provide references or a contract.
- They don't answer your questions clearly or seem evasive.
Protect Yourself:
- Don’t rush into a decision. Take your time to compare estimates from local, trusted contractors.
- Check for permits and insurance. In Framingham, any contractor working within the city’s right of way must be bonded and insured.
- Ask for references. A reputable company will be happy to provide them.
- Verify credentials. Call the Engineering office to double-check if a contractor has obtained any required permits at (508)532-6010.
- Report suspicious activity. If you suspect a contractor is a scammer, contact the Framingham Police Department (508)872-1212.
If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never agree to work without a contract, and don’t pay in full before the job is completed to your satisfaction. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the City of Framingham Engineering office for assistance. Stay safe, and protect yourself from driveway paving scams.
