Driveway permit overview
Any property owner seeking to install a NEW or to MODIFY (expand, modify, alter, and/or relocate) an existing driveway curb cut (driveway apron section that resides within the public way) must first obtain City Approval via a Public Way Access Permit (PWAP).
Any property owner who is ripping out and replacing an existing driveway (making no modifications to the original curb opening) or overlaying an existing driveway/parking lot will need to follow the instructions listed below.
Driveways and/or parking lots that connect to a State-owned road are required to receive an Access Permit from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and do not require a permit from the Department of Public Works.
Driveways that connect to a private road do not require a permit from the Department of Public Works.
