MONKEYPOX

A Massachusetts resident has tested positive for Monkey Pox. There are NO cases of Monkey Pox in Framingham. Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus which also includes variola virus (smallpox), and cowpox. The disease is called monkeypox because the agent was first discovered in laboratory monkeys in 1958, but the natural hosts of the virus are rodents. “Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are collaborating with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to investigate a situation in which a U.S. resident tested positive for monkeypox on May 18 after returning to the U.S. from Canada.”
