Incendiaries were used by the British as a terror and siege weapon to subdue rebellious coastal colonist towns. John Horrigan presents a chronological view of fires that impacted the thirteen colonies and their fight for independence. This lecture will cover notable fires, starting with the burning of munitions, homes and barns in Concord and Lexington in April 1775. Our greatest songwriters of the early 20th century have produced a body of work that has withstood the test of time. We still love to play and hear the music of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and many more. But what makes this music so special and timeless? How do the musical characteristics of each writer make them distinctive and unmistakable? This series starts with the songs of George Gershwin and will explore the qualities that distinguish his unique style and musical personality.
