Votes for Women - Massachusetts Leaders in the Woman Suffrage Movement, Presented by: Barbara Berenson

Tuesday, May 17, 2022

FOR AGES 55+ -- Votes for Women: Massachusetts Leaders in the Woman Suffrage Movement -- Barbara Berenson, author of Massachusetts in the Woman Suffrage Movement: Revolutionary Reformers, will discuss Massachusetts’ role in the struggle for woman suffrage. Lucy Stone and other local abolitionists were among the first who opposed women’s exclusion from political life. Demanding the vote and other reforms, they launched the first National Woman’s Rights Convention in 1850. After the Civil War, the Boston-based American Woman Suffrage Association led campaigns across the country. Their work laid the foundation for the next generation of suffragists to triumph over tradition. Barbara Berenson is the author and co-editor of several books focusing on Massachusetts history. She holds degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. She worked as a Senior Attorney at the Mass. Supreme Judicial Court until June 2019. Call the Callahan Ctr. to register by 5/16: 508-532-5980 ext. 0
