Statement from Mayor Yvonne M. Spicer Regarding Dr. Samuel S. Wong, Director of Framingham’s Public Health Department’s Medical Leave

Framingham, MA – As I’m sure, many of you have been reading conflicting information about the Medical Leave of Health Director Dr. Sam Wong. The City released an announcement on December 29, 2020, that Dr. Wong would be taking medical leave as of today. If you read today’s MetroWest Daily News, you see in his own words that he’s exhausted and absolutely needs to take a break. I’ve enjoyed a collaborative and mutually supportive relationship with Dr. Wong. In fact, I recently re-appointed him to his position. I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the job he has done in the City of Framingham.

Dr. Sam Wong is a consummate professional, and right now, he needs to put the energy into taking care of himself and his family. As an employee of the City of Framingham, he’s entitled to the same rights and privileges as any employee, and personnel matters need to be handled appropriately and respectfully. I ask all of you at this time to continue to support the Health Department, which he has built, to be able to operate extremely well under the leadership of Assistant Director Alexandra DePalo. Finally, I ask that you honor and respect the fact that Dr. Wong and his family need privacy, prayers, and well wishes for a speedy recovery at this time.

Sincerely,
Mayor Yvonne M. Spicer
