The City of Framingham Has Placed Fencing Around Cedar Woods at 618R Waverly Street
To Prevent Access to Lead-Impacted Soils
Lead Soils Contained to Unoccupied Area not to Impact Residents and Local Businesses

Framingham, MA - On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, Weston & Sampson, the City of Framingham’s environmental consultant, informed the City of the results of soil borings and water/sediment sampling from Cedar Woods located at 618R Waverly Street. The soil borings showed elevated lead concentrations in soil samples from 0-3’ deep. The testing was conducted under the City’s Brownfield grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), overseen by the Planning & Community Development Division.

Timeline:

  • April 6-8, 2020: Weston & Sampson conducted soil borings
  • April 16-17, 2020: Groundwater and surface water/sediment sampling was conducted
  • May 20, 2020: City’s Licensed Site Professional, Carol Bois, and Environmental Protection Officer, Brian T. Smith, received testing results from the April 6-8, 2020 borings, showing elevated lead concentrations in soil samples from 0-3’ deep. Additional samples were submitted to a laboratory for soil 0-1’ deep to provide data for an Imminent Hazard Evaluation.
  • June 1, 2020: Analytical Results for the 0-1’ deep samples were received by Weston & Sampson, who evaluated the data and completed an Imminent Hazard Evaluation.
  • June 3, 2020: Weston & Sampson notified the City of its data evaluation results, indicating the presence of an Imminent Hazard as defined in the Massachusetts Contingency Plan, 310 CMR 40.0000, et. Seq., due to elevated levels of lead.
  • June 15, 2020: A fence company, contracted by the City, completed construction of a fence around the affected area to prevent access.  

The City will continue to work with MassDEP to ensure that all activities undertaken at this site comply with the Massachusetts Contingency Plan, 310 CMR 40.0000 requirements.
