GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Helen Heineman, President Emerita, Framingham State University
Alfred Lord Tennyson was Queen Victoria’s favorite poet and had a wider readership than any other poet of his time. The poet who wrote “The Lady of Shalott,” “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” “Idylls of the King,” “In Memoriam,” and “Crossing the Bar” is a permanent part of our culture who carefully crafted his career with his audience and his sovereign. He was the heir of Keats and Shelly, a lyricist of unsurpassed emotional force and versatility. This lecture will present his life in the context of his age, as well as several select poems which illustrate the strangeness, the strength, the individuality, and the timelessness of his extraordinary talent.
