MASS ADVOCATES STANDING STRONG : ANNUAL DAY OF SELF-ADVOCACY

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong (MASS) was established in 1998 as a non-profit self-advocacy organization. It was founded on the belief that people with disabilities should be meaningful participants in all decisions that impact their lives, both on an individual level and system wide. MASS’ founders were inspired by the People First movement which originated in Sweden in 1968. Members of the movement were demanding to be seen first as a person not a disability. The People First Movement is the disability equivalent of the civil rights movement and MASS is the People First Group of Massachusetts. Today MASS continues to operate as a state-wide self-advocacy organization run for and governed by people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD). Our board, members, trainers, and conference presenters are all individuals with disabilities.
