The City has concluded that the Woodland PS force main should be replaced due to its age, materials of construction and risk/consequences of failure. The existing 10-inch force is approximately 60 years old and is constructed of asbestos cement (AC) pipe. The force main currently crosses under the Massachusetts Turnpike and in areas of high vulnerability that are subject to significant damage if the pipeline were to fail. The DPW recently needed to repair a section of the force main located adjacent to the pump station. In order to avoid future access issues for maintenance and repairs of the force main, a new alignment for the force main will be installed to eliminate the existing crossing under the Mass Pike.
Construction began in September of 2018 and is ongoing.
The Contractor will resume construction in late March in the off-road easement that runs parallel to the MassPike. Some work will be required in Edgell Rd. for testing, completion of final sewer connections, and final curb-to-curb paving. All work is scheduled to be completed by the end of May.
Edgell Road Traffic Detour to begin April 3, 2019
Variable Message Boards will be used to communicate changes in traffic patterns. Work in Edgell Road will require a detour for southbound traffic. Northbound traffic will be maintained through the work zone. Southbound traffic will be detoured down Belnap Street to Grove Street. OVERSIZED VEHICLES CAN NOT USE GROVE STREET due to a height restriction at the overpass. Trucks and larger vehicles MUST use Mill Street.
