Chief of Police
On June 29th , 2001 Steven B. Carl became only the fifth Chief that the department has operated under since 1911. Chief Carl began his career in 1983 as a patrolman, rising through the ranks and making an impact at every level.

Chief Carl has extensive experience in all aspects of law enforcement operations and administration, and is skilled in the design, implementation and management of public safety strategies.

Implemented Programs
Chief Carl, since taking over the department, has implemented the Town Meeting Survey in an effort to address town-wide concerns and become more customer focused and responsive to the community needs. He has implemented initiatives to streamline the department and improve accountability. Some of these projects include the auditing of the evidence room and the reorganization of the methods used to store police records.

Education
Chief Carl obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Framingham State College in 1983 and his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Westfield State College in 1994. In addition, Chief Carl has attended the following law enforcement educational training:

  • Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar
  • Senior Management Institute for Police
