The Division of Community and Economic Development has developed a program to facilitate the redevelopment of brownfields sites in the Town of Framingham.

We have received two, three-year, $200,000 Assessment grants for a total of $400,000 from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  More information on the grants can be found on our Brownfield Grants page.  Em Português

Brownfields Definition
The State of Massachusetts does not have a formal definition of the term brownfields. However, according to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), properties that are considered brownfields typically have certain characteristics in common, including:
  • Abandoned or for sale or lease
  • Have been used for commercial or industrial purposes
  • May have been reported to MassDEP because contamination has been found
  • May not have been assessed due to fear of unknown contamination conditions

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines a brownfield as
real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.  See the full legal context for the EPA Brownfields Grants here:  EPA Brownfields Definition

Brownfields Redevelopment Process
Brownfields redevelopment is a complex process that carries financial, legal, and environmental risks and uncertainties, and can present substantial barriers to owners and developers.

The Division is working with a number of organizations on this process including: Framingham Economic Development Industrial Corporation (EDIC), Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The first step is to assess the site in order to establish the extent of the contamination and begin to prepare clean-up and redevelopment plans that will restore the site to a more productive land use.
